Stéphane Grappelli - “ My Other Love  “ As Time Goes By ”

Stephane Grapelli plays Violin

  Beau Séjour Théâtre, Guernsey

Stéphane Grappelli (26 January 1908 - 1 December 1997) was born in Paris to Italian parents. Grappelli started his musical career busking on the streets of Montmartre with a violin. He began playing the violin at age 12, and attended the Conservatoire de Paris studying music theory, between 1924 and 1928. He made his fame in Paris as a violin vituoso. He also worked as a silent film pianist while at the conservatory and played the saxaphone and accordian.

Grappelli called his piano “ My Other Love ” and in the 1950s (but no longer available commercially) released an album of solo piano of the same name.

His early fame came playing with the “ Quintette du Hot Club de France ” with Django Reinhart, one of the earliest and most influential jazz groups in Europe - which disbanded in 1939 due to World War II - in later years he collaborated with Yehudi Menuhin (considered to be one of the twentieth century's greatest classical violinists)

On this recording, he is playing with “ The Dis Disley Trio ”.
